Question:

I have a 5 and a half month old girl who is due for her MMR shots soon. Is there a risk of autism associated with this vacine? Can you offer any helpful advice or information?

Answer:

I believe the MMR is due at 15-18 months, rather than 5 months. So I would not get that vaccine at this time.

There is inconclusive data to link this vaccine to autism, but if I had it to do over, I would have all 3 shots administered separatly, rather than in one dose. It is available in the United States that way if you ASK.

It is very important to remember why we vaccinate. Measles can kill or significantly impair a child, and there are 27 kinds of measles. Do not lightly make a decision to not vaccinate. This choice also has potential consequences. It puts your child at risk for something different, but just as possibly difficult, and lifelong.

I am not advocating either vaccinations or not to vaccinate either. It is a choice each parent needs to make, but it should be an informed choice of all the risks and side affects, not just because you have heard some scarry information
